Safety in metal racking: free technical conference in Segovia

On 22 October 2026, the Segovia Territorial Labour Office is holding the conference «Objective: Safe Warehouse», with free registration. One of its sessions is entirely dedicated to safety in metal racking, its maintenance and its periodic inspections, and is delivered by Noega Systems, exactly what we deal with here every day.

Safety in metal racking is a legal obligation

Industrial racking is work equipment, not furniture. As such, it is subject to Royal Decree 1215/1997, which requires employers to keep work equipment in safe condition throughout its entire service life and to subject it to periodic checks when it may deteriorate through use. The UNE-EN 15635 standard specifies this duty for storage systems, the appointment of a person responsible for storage equipment safety (PRSES), periodic visual checks by the company’s own staff and an annual racking inspection carried out by an expert independent of the day-to-day operation of the installation.

The problem is that this cycle is easily broken. A forklift impact on an upright, a change of levels without recalculating loads, a change of pallet type or an improvised extension alter the design conditions without anyone recording it. The damage builds up silently until the installation fails, and the collapse of loaded racking rarely has minor consequences.

What Noega Systems and Alma López bring to the conference

Noega Systems takes part as a collaborating organisation in the central technical session of the programme, from 10:40 to 11:30, «Storage equipment. Safety in metal racking. Smart warehouses. Maintenance and inspections».

The talk is given by Ms Alma López, head of sales, consultancy, inspections and training at Noega Systems, S.L.U., an ENAC-accredited inspection body and the provider of the ITE® service.

It is the only talk at the conference that goes into depth on the storage installation itself, and it covers four areas:

• Storage equipment. The different storage systems and the design conditions on which their performance depends: expected loads, type of load unit, heights and aisles.
• Safety in metal racking. The real risks of the installation in operation —forklift impacts, overloads, uncalculated modifications— and the measures that contain them: protections, signage of permissible loads and bracing.
• Smart warehouses. What changes when the warehouse is automated, less direct exposure for operators, but greater demands on structural reliability and clear protocols for working in aisles with moving equipment.
• Maintenance and inspections. The cycle required by UNE-EN 15635, internal checks, annual technical inspection, classification of damage by risk level and what to do with each one.

It is the part of the conference that translates the regulations into concrete decisions, when a repair is enough and when the bay must be unloaded and blocked off immediately, which records should be kept and how to demonstrate, if the need arises, that the company has fulfilled its duty of supervision over the installation.
